Unzipping Folders
This article describes how to unzip folders in Windows if you are experiencing issues doing so in File Explorer.
If you are experiencing the following issues, then this article should help you out.
- If you attempt to unzip a folder and find that it produces an empty folder.
- If you attempt to unzip a folder and it takes you two tries to completely unzip it completely.
The following are the instructions:
- Navigate to the following website to download 7-Zip for free: https://www.7-zip.org/download.html
- Make sure to click the Download button on the System that reads "64-bit Windows x64" and Description reads "7-Zip installer for Windows".
- Run the installer.
- If you get a pop-up saying that IT needs to approve the installation request, please reach out to IT via support ticket to have them approve the request so that you can proceed. You can place a ticket via our support portal:

- You will see this pop-up. Click Install.
- The installation should take no longer than 5 seconds. After it's done, the pop-up will look like this. Click Close.
- Now, to unzip a folder, you can right-click the folder and unzip using 7-Zip.
- (Only if using Windows 11) When right-clicking the folder, you must first choose the option called "Show more options" before you are able to see the 7-zip option.
- You can choose the "Extract Here" option to extract all the files in the zipped folder directly into the folder where the zipped folder already is. This may be ideal in some situations but if there is a lot of files in the folder, it can create a mess.
- Otherwise, you can choose the option directly below "Extract Here" to extract all the files into its own folder that will have the same name as the zipped folder you are trying to unzip.
- (Only if using Windows 11) When right-clicking the folder, you must first choose the option called "Show more options" before you are able to see the 7-zip option.
